Rice & Beans for FANLAP

The following was written by Club Cruceros member Mike McLeod of the catamaran Orion located in Marina Palmira, the pictures were taken by Cathy McLeod.

Last week during the Cruisers Morning Net on VHF channel 22, and during the topic of “General  Announcements”, I took the opportunity to promote the Fundación Ayuda Niños La Paz, A.C. (FANLAP) rice, beans and oil program.  At that time I offered a Matching Funds Challenge with $4,000 pesos.  By the end of that day, 12,000 pesos were collected and or/promised, for a total of $16,250 pesos.

Over the next week, I developed a spreadsheet that totaled quantities and prices to calculate how the $16,250 pesos could be utilized.

With Judy Peterson, Legal Representative for FANLAP, we went to City Club to find the prices for each item.  We then provided the spreadsheet to FANLAP Executive Director, Veronica Menchaca, to enter the quantities and ratios normally purchased to balance the needs of the meal program of FANLAP.

Today we took the final spreadsheet and the $16,250 pesos to City Club and met Judy Peterson to place the order.

After meeting the store manager, we were assigned a store employee to fill the order and deliver the order below to FANLAP.

In just less than one hour we had to pallets of provisions loaded onto a delivery truck and underway for the FANLAP facilities.

The order totaled $14,315 pesos, which included a delivery fee and a well-earned tip for the store employee who filled the order, loaded the truck, drove the truck and then unloaded the truck at the FANLAP facilities.

The $1,936 peso balance of funds have been left with FANLAP to purchase fresh produce with a promise to provide a factura (a detailed receipt which includes our tax i.d. number) for all purchases.
